The combined positive effects of vitamin C on collagen synthesis, antioxidant status, and immune function make it an important nutrient for surgery patients and for supporting wound healing.* Vitamin C is necessary for the proper action of those enzymes involved in phase I liver detoxification.* In addition, as an antioxidant, vitamin C helps quench the free-radical intermediates that are created during this first phase of the detoxification of harmful substances in the liver.* Furthermore, vitamin C helps increase the level of the important antioxidant glutathione by increasing glutathione's rate of synthesis, which enhances the liver's phase II detoxification.*
